Big City Life

Awake.
dust the night off my eyes, turn out of bed alone
morning ritual, face, teeth, hands, hair
pants, shirt, cardigan, coat, scarf, hat and gloves, lets not forget glasses

walk out of my building
step down off the front stoop, and wait for a second, deep breath
extend my hand from my coat pocket and hail a cab
57th and 1st Avenue please

I'm meeting someone today
meeting at 59th but i enjoy a little walk, to clear my head

hand to the handle, money exchanges hands, thanks
All around me, giants...the biggest of buildings I've seen
and when i arrive to the cafe by the corner of the street, i sit...waiting
Coffee, black- and the breeze from the street sweeps up across my hand as i raise the cup to my lips

simple pleasure.
I look at my watch as if time will move faster, or you will arrive any sooner than the time that was appointed, i am early for this encounter

and then...
a familiar face in the crowd of people crossing the street like they where all going the same place, together

your bangs just brushed about your eyes, and the hat on your head, romantic
scarf to cover your neck, coat to cover your heart
walk up to me, i stand
kiss my cheek and i could have died, soft and comforting like the other side of your pillow after a long night's rest

just another day, always just another...please.
